On the Physics of Type I X-ray Bursts on Accreting Neutron Stars at High Accretion Rates

چکیده
We investigate the effect of the hot CNO cycle breakout reaction 15O(α,γ)19Ne on the occurrence of type I X-ray bursts on accreting neutron stars. For frp . 0.1, where frp is a dimensionless factor by which we multiply the 15O(α,γ)19Ne reaction rate of Caughlan & Fowler (1988), our model predicts that bursts should occur only for accretion rates Ṁ below a critical value ≈ 0.3ṀEdd. This agrees with observations. For larger values of frp, including the standard choice frp = 1, the model switches to a new regime in which bursts occur all the way up to Ṁ ≈ ṀEdd. Since the latter regime disagrees with observations, we suggest that the true 15O(α,γ)19Ne reaction rate is lower than usually assumed. The Latitude of Type I X-ray Burst Ignition on Rapidly Rotating Neutron Stars
We investigate the latitude at which type I X-ray bursts are ignited on rapidly rotating accreting neutron stars. We find that, for a wide range of accretion rates Ṁ, ignition occurs preferentially at the equator, in accord with the work of Spitkovsky et al. However, for a range of Ṁ below the critical Ṁ above which bursts cease, ignition occurs preferentially at higher latitudes. The range of ...
متن کاملType I X-ray Bursts at Low Accretion Rates
Neutron stars, with their strong surface gravity, have interestingly short timescales for the sedimentation of heavy elements. Recent observations of unstable thermonuclear burning (observed as X-ray bursts) on the surfaces of slowly accreting neutron stars (< 0.01 of the Eddington rate) motivate us to examine how sedimentation of CNO isotopes affects the ignition of these bursts. We further es...
متن کاملThe Angular Momentum of Accreting Neutron Stars
I review the rotation measurements of accreting neutron stars. Many of the highly magnetic (B > 10 G) accreting X-ray pulsars have been continuously observed with the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) aboard the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO) since April 1991. These observations show that the accretion torque exerted on many disk-fed accreting X-ray pulsars changes sign on a m...
متن کاملThe Ocean and Crust of a Rapidly Accreting Neutron Star: Implications for Magnetic Field Evolution and Thermonuclear Flashes
We investigate the atmospheres, oceans, and crusts of neutron stars accreting at rates sufficiently high (typically in excess of the local Eddington limit) to stabilize the burning of accreted hydrogen and helium. For hydrogen-rich accretion at global rates in excess of 10M⊙ yr −1 (typical of a few neutron stars), we discuss the thermal state of the deep ocean and crust and their coupling to th...
متن کاملSedimentation and Type I X-ray Bursts at Low Accretion Rates
Neutron stars, with their strong surface gravity, have interestingly short timescales for the sedimentation of heavy elements. Motivated by observations of Type I X-ray bursts from sources with extremely low persistent accretion luminosities, LX < 10 36 ergs s(≃ 0.01LEdd), we study how sedimentation affects the distribution of isotopes and the ignition of H and He in the envelope of an accretin...
